Doing More For My Son

|

I am so excited that my son is going to New Country Day Camp this summer, thanks to a scholarship program that’s available at the agency I am employed with. I always dreamed of being able to send him to camp, and provide him with the best and most enriching experiences.

As a child, due to financial constraints, I never got to go to camp or pursue many classes and programs that I was passionate about outside of what my amazing elementary and high school provided. However, I knew I wanted different for my child.

Educational Alliance, the organization I work for, provides many wonderful programs for students, parents, older adults—you name it—and the 14th Street Y’s New Country Day Camp (NCDC) is going to provide my son with an amazing summer experience.

I picked NCDC because I wanted my son to have learning opportunities outside of our neighborhood. I wanted him to experience life in a different part of the city. It is important for parents to provide their children with well-rounded experiences. We currently live in the Bronx, and he attends school there. I wanted him to be able to get out of his borough and see life in other areas. NCDC provides an excellent opportunity for this because the camp is in Staten Island, but he will also experience the East Village as well with aftercamp. Aftercamp, in addition to the fact the kids get to escape the stresses of the city life, was one of the main reasons why I chose NCDC over other camps. I work full-time and it was important King had a safe and fun place to go while I finish my work day.

King and I have talked about camp and he is excited to explore and play in the dirt. He loves to be outside and go to the playground and this will provide him with a rich and fulfilling memorable experience. King loves super heroes, toys, and the Wizard of Oz. He was born in California, where our family is from, so he is used to being outdoors. Being in NYC has presented different challenges, but I want to give him that large-outdoors-California-like childhood experience.

They still have a few summer camp spots available as well as jobs for camp counselors and staff.

If you’re looking for a wonderful summer program for your child, definitely check out their flexible program offerings.
