Tell Us Your Story: A Creative Writing Workshop with Rhonda

This generative workshop offers an opportunity to get started (or started again) on writing YOUR story. During class, we will write in response to prompts and exercises. In sharing and discussing this work with the group, we will begin to discover our own creative paths. Writers of all skill levels are welcome.

 

If the Walls Could Talk Visual Theater Workshop with Concrete Temple Theatre

Join us for If the Walls Could Talk, a visual theater workshop. It will begin with a virtual tour of the Tenement Museum on Tuesday, October 8, where we’ll explore its history and the lives of its past residents. Participants will then create scenes, monologues, and plays inspired by these discoveries.

“Golden Giggles” offers a welcoming, supportive environment where participants can express their creativity, improve mental agility, and engage in spontaneous storytelling. Through playful improvisational exercises and games, participants will enhance their communication skills, sharpen their wit, and experience the joy of unscripted comedy. No previous experience is required.

 

Painting with Art Therapy Interns

Space will be limited to 8 participants. Registration is required and begins on Wednesday, October 2 for both AM and PM Painting Studio sessions. This relaxing, expressive group series is ideal for members interested in creating art using acrylic, watercolor, or oil paints on canvas or paper. Participants will have the option of using a prompt to guide their painting if desired. Everyone is welcome, whether you’re curious yet inexperienced or an established professional – no previous art experience is required.

Heart and Lung Wellness Workshop with Next Breath Organization from Rutgers University and New York Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center

Balance 101 with Demetra

This chair class focuses on strengthening muscles and improving flexibility to allow for the joint stability and mobility we need for walking and completing everyday tasks around the home like carrying groceries and doing the laundry. People of all abilities, including anyone who uses an assistive walking device or wheelchair or is recovering from knee, foot, hip injuries, etc., can participate. You also have the option of completing standing work, with the chair in arms-reach. No registration is required.

 

Tapping Together with Demetra

Join us for an exciting intergenerational tap dance class, offered in partnership with 14Y Afterschool students grades K – 2. Instruction is tailored for adults and children who have a passion for dance and rhythm or just want to have fun. No previous dance experience is necessary to participate.

If you have questions about your tablets, laptops, smartphones, or anything related to technology, stop by the Technology desk Rebecca is here to help. She can help with device usage, troubleshooting, and offer guidance on various topics such as email, texting, setting up voicemail, tips and tricks, learning about apps, and protecting yourself from viruses and malware. Fall Prevention and Balance through Music and Movement with Columbia OT Interns, Amanda and Anjelika

The “Music and Movement” program is an 8-session occupational therapy fall prevention and balance program. Each session focuses on a different music genre or era, creating an engaging and age-appropriate experience and includes a themed game, such as Balance Bingo or Name That Tune, to reinforce learning and engagement.

Meal Service Helpers

Our center serves delicious and nutritious meals to LES’s older adult community daily and needs volunteers to serve food during lunch services.

 

Food Pantry

Held on the first Wednesday of each month

Packing 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM and 1:40 – 4:00 PM

Distribution 1:40 – 4:00 PM

The Sirovich Center holds a food pantry service on the first Wednesday of each calendar month.

Contact M Clayton at mrclayton@edalliance.org to explore various roles that contribute to our mission, such as helping serve lunch, packaging pantry foods, and more. It’s important to note that all volunteers must be vaccinated for COVID-19 to ensure the safety of our community. We look forward to seeing you.

 

Volunteer with Educational Alliance

Educational alliance will be hosting support events for asylum-seekers in the coming weeks and months. If you are interested in volunteering and/or if you are bilingual and interested in supporting volunteer work for this, please sign up here.
