Classes and Activities

The Sirovich Center invites you to participate in ongoing meet-ups and entertaining social activities that will help you to stay connected to other members and program staff. Join us for a variety of free experiences that take advantage of the best that New York City has to offer.

Join us in advocating for increased funding for aging services, including nutrition, housing, and arts and educational programming for older New Yorkers. Meet in the lobby at 9:45 AM to travel to public transportation together, or meet us outside City Hall Park. We encourage you to bring signs!

1940s Radio Hour Performance with AhHA!Broadway

Travel back in time! Experience a “radio show” performed using transcriptions from original 1940s broadcast recordings, along with live music and sound effects.

Mainstage Showcase

Friday, May 29 and Saturday, May 30 | 3:00 – 5:30 PM | 14th Street Y, Theater

Experience a vibrant lineup of acting, singing, dancing, storytelling, comedy, and music, performed by older New Yorkers and our Ageless Arts intergenerational classes. A reception with live music and light refreshments will follow in the 14Y Lobby. Advanced registration is strongly encouraged. Discover the art of ceramics in this hands-on beginner class! Learn the fundamentals of working with clay, including hand-building techniques, basic wheel throwing, and glazing. Our expert instructor will guide you step by step as you create your own unique pottery pieces. This class serves as the first step toward our Intermediate Ceramic Courses, providing you with the foundational skills needed to advance your craft. Improv Ensemble with Robert Galinsky

Class Dates: March 30 – June 1

Life is an improvisation—sometimes comic, sometimes dramatic. This improvisation class invites participants to create original scenes and characters through ensemble-based improvisation and theatrical play. The class culminates in an optional performance as part of the CelebratEArts Mainstage showcase in May at the 14th Street Y. This program is made possible by SU-CASA, a regrant program of LMCC.

 

Latin Social Dance with Ximena

Class Dates: 4/6 – 6/29 (No class on Monday, May 25)
Learn to connect with your body, the music, and your peers through the rhythms of salsa, bachata, cumbia, merengue, cha-cha, and more. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

 

Beginners Ceramic Session with Laura

Planning to swim at the 14th Street Y? Make sure to register at the Sirovich front desk before your visit—registration is required! Once registered, you’ll receive a confirmation. Without it, you won’t be able to attend. Don’t forget to bring your Sirovich membership card for check-in and a swim cap (required for all swimmers). Jazz Line Dance with Bernard

Discover the joy of movement in our Jazz Line Dance class! This dynamic class blends the vibrant energy of jazz dance with the fun and social aspects of line dancing, creating an exhilarating experience for dancers of all levels.

 

Balance 101 with Demetra 
3:10 PM – 4:00 PM | 1ST FL Auditorium | Meeting in the Mezzanine on 5/11
This chair class focuses on strengthening muscles and improving flexibility to allow for the joint stability and mobility we need for walking and completing everyday tasks around the home like carrying groceries and doing the laundry. People of all abilities, including anyone who uses an assistive walking device or wheelchair or is recovering from knee, foot, hip injuries, etc., can participate. You also have the option of completing standing work, with the chair in arms-reach.

 

Tapping Together with Demetra
4:00 – 4:50 PM | 1ST FL Auditorium | Meeting in the Mezzanine on 5/11
Join us for an exciting intergenerational tap dance class, offered in partnership with 14Y Afterschool students grades K – 2. Instruction is tailored for adults and children who have a passion for dance and rhythm or just want to have fun. No previous dance experience is necessary to participate.

Tai Chi Class with Annie

Tai Chi is an art that promotes balance, strength, grace, and flexibility, and it promotes a meditative mood with its “dance of quiet motion.”

Chair Yoga for Bone Health with Rie

Dance to traditional songs in a welcoming, choreographed class. Build grace, strength, and confidence while connecting with others and celebrating culture. Class is taught in Mandarin.

Puppet Performance and Workshop by Loco7 Dance Puppet Theatre Company

Class Dates: March 18 – May 27
You’re invited to take part in a creative and hands-on workshop centered on puppetry and storytelling. Each participant will design and build their own puppet, then develop a short story inspired by the character they create. The workshop will conclude with a final presentation, where participants share their puppet and story with the group.

If you have questions about your tablets, laptops, smartphones, or anything related to technology, stop by the Technology desk Rebecca is here to help. She can help with device usage, troubleshooting, and offer guidance on various topics such as email, texting, setting up voicemail, tips and tricks, learning about apps, and protecting yourself from viruses and malware. Feel free to stop by!

 

AhHa!Broadway Workshop with Heather and Michael
11:30 AM – 12:45 PM | Auditorium
Class Dates: 4/10, 4/17, 4/24, 5/1, 5/8, 5/15
Travel back to the fabulous forties in this hands-on workshop. Participants will collaborate to produce an authentic-style “radio show” using transcriptions from original 1940s broadcast recordings. To register, email sirovich@14streety.org or stop by the front desk to speak with Yenny.

 

Jewelry Making with Phyllis
1:00 PM – 3:00 PM | Lounge
Unleash your creativity in this hands-on beginner jewelry making class! Whether you’re looking to start a new hobby or create personalized gifts, this workshop will guide you through the basics of designing and assembling your own custom jewelry. Learn techniques such as wire wrapping, beading, and working with findings, while experimenting with various materials like glass beads, semi-precious stones, and metals. Participants will have the opportunity to donate select handmade pieces for sale at the center. Proceeds from these sales go directly back into supporting center programs and services—a fun and creative way to give back to the community!

 

Alliance Stage Company: Expressive Arts with Cory

An acting group that builds connection, creativity, and the joy of performing. Members create and perform short skits, musical comedy, improv, plays, and reader’s theater building confidence on stage and in everyday life.

 

Figurative Sculpture with Bianca
1:30 – 4:30 PM | 3RD FL Ceramic Studio
Fee $350
Study the human figure through clay. Create hands, feet, and torsos while learning proportion, basic anatomy, and form. Ten week session. Registration is required. This class is for registered ceramic students. Please email sirovichceramics@edalliance.org with any further questions.

 

Vocal Ensemble with Mariano
3:30 – 5:00 PM | 1ST FL Auditorium
An intergenerational chorus in partnership with 14Y Afterschool. Youth and older adults sing together, exploring classic and modern songs while building connection and shared joy. All ages welcome. No experience needed.

The Sirovich Center holds a food pantry service on the first Wednesday of each calendar month.
