Sirovich Classes and Programs Schedule

All classes are accessible, free, and led by professional instructors and teaching artists. Each class offers a great opportunity to learn new skills or revisit old pastimes as well as engage with your community.

For In-Person Programs

We encourage you to wear a well-fitting mask while inside the Sirovich Center.

Please do not arrive more than 15 minutes before your activities.

Loco7 Theatre’s Shadow Puppet and Storytelling Workshop with Federico Restrepo
Starting, Thursday March 28 – May 16 | 3:30 – 5:00 PM | Auditorium

This workshop studies in Shadow Puppet Form and Performance introduces you to the use of shadow puppetry and storytelling. You will make a shadow puppet and learn to manipulate them to tell a story. You will collaboratively develop a short shadow puppet piece, which you will perform for the public, here at the Sirovich Center.

 

Throw A Wrinkle at Us: An Improv Ensemble with Sucasa Artist Robert

This is a series of inspirational improvisational theatre workshops where members create a live performance, based 100 percent on audience members throwing suggestions at the ensemble and where each ensemble member draws upon their unique past, present, and future. There are no lines or stage blocking to remember, and each performance revels in the richness and diversity of each member’s life.

SU-CASA is a community arts engagement program that places artists and organizations in residence at older adult centers across New York City.

Participatory Budgeting Informational Session with City Council District 2
Tuesday, March 19 | 1:00 – 2:00 PM | Lounge
No registration needed. Just drop in.

You can vote on how $1 million of capital funding will be spent in District 2 in this year’s budget. Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a great way to engage New Yorkers as young as middle school-age and motivates our neighbors to engage in the civic process and make decisions by sharing ideas, developing proposals, and voting on community projects. Carlina was the first Council Member to bring PB to District 2 and she is excited to have our community vote to allocate public money to improve our public spaces. Join us to learn how to participate in the vote.

 

BIG Stories in small Spaces Performance with The Concrete Temple Theatre’s Sirovich Visual Theatre and Playwriting Group

Join Yael Acher “KAT” Modiano – award winning, Fulbright scholar flutist, composer, and educator. Share the magic of music and visuals as we watch and talk about video clips of legendary and current performances by great musicians, orchestras, ensembles, soloists, singers, and dance companies in all music genres.

 

Normalizing Neurodiversity with M & Sheryl

This interactive workshop will focus on increasing awareness and understanding the unique ways in which we all experience and interact with our community. Participants will learn about neurodiversity, which refers to the wide spectrum of ways our brains’ function, influencing our perceptions, moods, behaviors, and interactions. Becoming familiar with our individuality allows us to be a more welcoming and inclusive community. We will engage in hands-on activities and discussion during this workshop. Participants will gain some insight into how our brain impacts the ways we cope, connect, and engage in community.

This film is a quirky and inspiring lens portraying stories of the personal and global impacts of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, following a cohort of young scientists and artists from around the world as they harness creativity, humor and compassion to lead the way towards hope and resilience. After the film there will be a panel discussion with NYU Langone Dr. Joshua Chodosh, Film Director, Cynthia Stone and Atlantic Fellow with the Global Brain Health Institute, Magda Kaczmarska.  Learn more about the film here.

Brain Dance is a movement practice that supports brain and body integration. Initially created by Anne Green Gilbert and based on developmental neuroscience, brain dance helps people of all ages improve posture, focus, flexibility, and maximize energy. In this intergenerational class, all ages are welcome! No dance experience necessary.
