Sirovich Center for Balanced Living

A full list of recurring events and classes as well as special events and workshops are detailed below.

All classes are accessible, free, and led by professional instructors and teaching artists. Each class offers a great opportunity to learn new skills or revisit old pastimes as well as engage with your community.

You are invited to connect for this weekly dance and storytelling class facilitated by dancer and creative aging teaching artist Magda Kaczmarska. Together we will discover the many ways we can share our stories – with words and with movement. Each class, we will progress through a gentle warm up, combining dance and fitness activities to prepare our minds and bodies for movement and culminate in a co-created dance story inspired by our collective explorations.  All are welcome. Dance activities can be done seated or standing. No prior dance experience required. DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is a flexible and balanced eating plan that helps create a heart-healthy eating style for life. We’ll go over the DASH diet guidelines recommended by the American Health Association and set diet plans for ourselves.

Popular Diet Trends; A Nutrition Workshop with Sonia Ahuja, MS, RDN, CDN | Hybrid

This presentation will highlight a few current trends, including Paleo, Keto, Intermittent Fasting, and the Mediterranean diet. Participants will explore the origin, current research, sustainability, and potential pitfalls of each of the diets.

Talk with Kara Tatelbaum, dancer / local author of Putting My Heels Down

A very special discussion with dancer and teacher Kara Tatelbaum about her debut memoir Putting My Heels Down: a memoir of having a dream…and a day job. Kara moved to the East Village at eighteen to pursue her dream of becoming a professional dancer. Putting My Heels Down exposes the harsh realities of life as a dancer but more importantly, the conflict so many of us experience between having a day job and having a dream. And, you won’t need to know about pliés to relate! Kara will discuss chasing her dreams, confronting harsh reality, practicing resilience, living in the East Village, and the path she found to publishing success.

Layer the Walls Part II uses puppetry, mask, and live action to portray stories of Chinese, Jewish, and Puerto Rican migrants/immigrants living in New York City’s tenement buildings between 1930 and 1970. Our shows have sold out in the past, so please let us know now if we can hold space for your community.
The performance is 60 minutes in length, followed by a Q & A with the artists. While this production is a Part II in a series, the stories stand on their own and previous viewing of Part I is not required. Please call 646-591-7051 or email Layerthewalls@gmail.com to reserve tickets.

Free Nutritional Counseling Session with NYC Aging
The Virtual Smart Living Initiative at the NYC Department for the Aging is offering FREE individual nutrition counseling sessions with their Nutritionist over video (Zoom, FaceTime, WeChat etc.). From the convenience of your own home, you can easily connect with a Nutritionist over video to learn how to make better food choices, based on your personal needs. Participants receive a FREE nutrition educational item for attending their first session. Free language interpreter services are available for clients who prefer to receive nutrition counseling in a language other than English. Interested? Chinese Dance Group Sessions 1 and 2

This season is Chinese classical dance. The Classical Dance Elite Class has held several courses. The system is comprehensive, from the shallower to the deeper, and gradually allows students to have a systematic understanding of classical dance. Lay a solid foundation for beginners, and help students with basic skills to improve their professional skills. System classes cover freehand body rhythm, sleeve dance techniques, sword dance techniques, Tai Chi, basic martial arts and internal skills

WHAT’S YOUR STORY? A Creative Writing Workshop with Rhonda

In this workshop, participants will write in class in response to prompts and share their work in a fun, supportive environment. Through group discussion, writers will find ways to frame their stories, try different forms, discover their voices and craft engaging narratives. Writers of all skill levels are welcome. On the 2nd & 4th weeks of each month, community partner Ansonia Music Outreach leads music-drenched and visually stimulating multi-media workshops in appreciation of opera and the arts.
