Light the Way for 14Y Artists

Help us light the way for artists at the 14Y

The 14Y Theater is launching a new local artist residency program in early 2021.
The 14Y will provide artists with the space, time, and financial resources to create new work and share it in innovative ways.

In honor of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, we’re asking you – a key part of our community – to help the 14Y to reignite the Theater at the 14th Street Y and fuel the many artists who have been deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

We need $25,000 to launch this new exciting residency program. We need your help to get there!

The Urgent Need

Since March 2020, the arts and theater industry from Broadway to our own black box theater, have been on pause to prevent the spread of COVID-19. In the last 9 months, the visual and performing arts field has lost 2.7 million jobs. But these staggering numbers, representing only established artists, fail to take into account emerging creatives—those holding down multiple jobs as they stage new work off-off Broadway, or exhibiting in a gallery downtown—the artists of our future.

Today, only a ghost light illuminates our dark theater—as our diverse community of artists and culture creators remain in the shadows waiting for the chance to come back into the light to create and share new art with our community again.

As an organization that places community at the heart of all that we do, we know that local artists need our support now more than ever before. Our new residency program will support artists at a critical time and create space for them to incubate work that reflects the changing realities of our lives at this moment in time.

A New Local Artist Residency Program

Starting in January 2021, the 14Y Theater and Gallery we will provide artists with the space, time, and financial resources to create new work. This new residency program will support artists at a critical time and create space for them to incubate work that reflects the changing realities of our lives at this moment in time.

This new program will host a new group of local artists, showcase two LABA Second Stage full productions virtually, and curate three residencies for LABA-alumni-affiliated artists.

With YOUR SUPPORT, we’ll secure enough funding to start with three residencies. Any additional funds can help us accommodate up to six local artists with a residency at the 14Y Theater.

All of the artists that will benefit from this new residency program will have a history of work with the 14Y Theater, including NYC or Global LABA alumni, or as part of our past theater seasons. Conscious of this moment, we will also prioritize producing artists of color. Each artist will have access to our theater space at the 14th Street Y, stipends to support their works, and technical support from our Arts + Culture staff. These residencies will culminate in eight new interdisciplinary works of art such as: LABA alumi new work by Yehuda Hyman and Sara Felder, “NAME PLAY” a new by-coastal zoom play and LABA 2nd Stage play by Richard Saudek and Willie Zabar.

Each residency will be shared with our community through virtual events broadcasted from the 14Y Theater, featuring performances of the works in progress. After each performance, Arts + Culture staff will lead a conversation with the artists along with leading voices in the field. The talkback sessions will address topics such as, “The impact of COVID-19 on the Arts” and “LGBTQ and Identity.” Stay tuned for more details!
