It Cuts the Ceiling: A 14Y Preschool Art Exhibition Gallery Opening

It Cuts the Ceiling: A 14Y Preschool Art Show is an exploration of how to make a line, how lines can jump, swoop, and spin, alongside the joy of mark-making.

Featuring over 40 unique prints by our Pre-K students, they are made through relief and monotype printing processes, as well as several large collaborative mixed- media works on paper by our 2’s and 3’s classes.

Through the 14Y Preschool’s Reggio Emilia-inspired approach, preschoolers explore process-based art activities like printmaking, painting, and collaborative drawing. The forms that emerge throughout the children’s artwork are archetypical, inventive, and strange– they tell us something about being human that cannot be expressed with words.\

Many famous abstract and surrealist painters, including Picasso, were fascinated by children’s art and the gestural freedom it often possesses. This is certainly true of many of the works in It Cuts the Ceiling. If one looks closer at these prints, however, the level of control, thoughtfulness, and planning used by the artists in this process becomes clear. Titled by the student artists, the sharp, contrasting lines that appear throughout the show are powerful enough to slice through time and physical space.

Light refreshments will be served.
