Enrichment Classes

Daily Enrichment Offerings through After School

The philosophy of the 14th Street Y After School is programming that centers on engaging heads, hearts, and hands. Classes are taught by our counselors and professional teaching artists. Your after schooler will take a class of their choosing that centers on movement, the arts, or exercising their brain.

  • No more than 16 students per class (some Classes are smaller) and they may not take the same class twice (unless it is a continuing class).
  • Youth Sports and Aquatics require an extra fee, discounted for After School children!
  • STUDY HALL IS OFFERED EVERY DAY—Please specify if you want your child to do homework instead of enrichment.
  • If your child does not like the class, they may change after the first week (space permitting).
  • On Fridays we celebrate Shabbat and have an hour long swim period (no enrichment offered).
  • Children will only be allowed to take a class if they are in the specified grade.
  • Enrichment classes are subject to change.

Class Descriptions

Monday:

Fun Factory (K-2nd)  

Youngers will learn and experience a variety of art mediums: painting, sketching, coloring, clay and more. Each week we will focus on a new craft and skill to get participants engaged in many different styles of creating. 

Movement (K-2nd)

Every week kids will learn different styles of dance, rhythm, and get their bodies moving! 

DIY at the Y (K-2nd)

Stuck inside on a cold or rainy day with nothing to do? Welcome to DIY at the Y! In this class we will be taking on do-it-yourself activities that can also be conducted at home! Using simple, affordable materials that can be found in the kitchen or that overstuffed arts and crafts closet, we will make amazing creations that artists and scientists alike will love. You can expect volcanoes, foam painting, slime… and more! 

Aerobics (K-2nd) 

Strengthen your body with some exciting and fast paced aerobic exercises! Kids will have the opportunity to get their wiggles out in a fun and engaging way! 

Ballet (Pre-K-2nd)

Arabesque! Your child will get a fantastic intro to ballet, a wonderfully creative way to get out their energy! This class comes at an additional fee of $305. 

Cooking (3rd-5th)

Travel the world and learn how to make delicious dishes from around the globe. Everything from the math behind measuring to cleaning up the kitchen will be learned in this class. Most importantly, you’ll master cooking tasty dishes like vegetable pizza, bruschetta, and quesadillas, and be able to help with dinner! 

Art (3rd-5th)

Students will work with a variety of mediums using their creativity to create amazing art projects in our beautiful art studio! 

Action Team News (3rd-5th)

Join our team of documentary filmmakers, news reporters, and journalists to cover all things After School! In this class, we’ll investigate different aspects of AFS through independently driven short video projects. Each student will explore a topic of their choosing and begin by researching, interviewing, and filming footage for their project. Students will then learn how to use iMovie to edit their final projects into short news reports or documentaries. 

Ping Pong (3rd-5th)

Learn how to serve, and the basics of all the different table tennis strokes! This class is great for beginners and seasoned players 

Knitting (3rd-5th)

Knitting is a hands-on class to learn the basics of how to knit. It will cover how to cast on and knit rows as well as teach students about the different types of knitting tools and techniques. With this foundation knowledge, students will have the ability to create many fun projects!

Basketball (All Ages)

This is a wonderful introduction to basketball for those who have not played before as well as a chance for 14th ballers to continue to develop their skills with Coaches Joey and Gil. This class comes at an additional fee of $305 that will be prorated for classes missed. Tuesday:

Gymnastics (5-6 yrs old | 6-7yrs old)

This program introduces your child to tumbling and gymnastics, focusing on basic mat exercises, balance beam, and cartwheels while improving your child’s strength, balance, flexibility and coordination in a non-competitive environment. Gaga is a physical class that allows children to exert lots of energy through running, dodging, and fun. It also incorporates the ideals of teamwork, strategic thinking, and creativity in making new variations of the game. Some of these variations include Silent Gaga, Team Gaga, Dodge-Ga, Freeze-Ga, Golden Snitch Gaga, Chickens vs Farmers, Poison Wall, Sticky Ninj-Ga, and Build-A-Ga. 

Mad Science (K-2nd)  

Science is truly all around us! Students will conduct experiments and explore the science of the world around them. Get some hands-on lab experience and learn some of the coolest experiments science has to offer! 

Martial Arts (K-2nd)

Learn the ancient practice of self-discipline and physical strength. Kids will practice real, safe moves on breakable boards and pads, while learning tumbling as well. 

Party Games (K-2nd)

An active games class just for youngers! Students will play theater arts games such as charades, salad bowl, taboo, “where ya goin?” and other games that exercise the mind and body! 

Dungeons & Dragons (3rd-5th)

Using the power of imagination and 20-sided dice, Pat will take your kids on a journey of mystery and intrigue in the all new Dungeons and Dragons class. Lovers of storytelling and adventure should be sure to stop by! 

Ping Pong (3rd-5th)

Learn how to serve, and the basics of all the different table tennis strokes! This class is great for beginners and seasoned players. 

Origami (3rd-5th)

Want to learn how to fold paper into cool shapes? Curious how to make an elephant out of paper? It’s possible with Origami! In this class students will master the ancient art of origami and end up with a zoo of paper wonders!

Advanced Photography (3rd-5th)

In this class, professional photographer Bridget Badore will teach the skills required to create impressive photographs using a professional camera. Students will learn how to control exposure through thoughtful experiments with light and shutter speed. Once we gain confidence navigating the settings on our digital cameras, we’ll learn how different lenses can change or enhance our images. Opportunities to experiment with analog cameras will illuminate our understanding of the history of photography and development of photographic technology. Throughout these lessons, students will create their own portfolio of photographs, using their new skills to develop their own unique creative vision. This class is continuing from last quarter. If you are interested in registering now there is a $150 prorated additional fee.

Girl’s Gaga (All Ages)

Gaga is a physical class that allows children to exert lots of energy through running, dodging, and fun. It also incorporates the ideals of teamwork, strategic thinking, and creativity in making new variations of the game. Woodcrafts (K-2nd)

Students will learn to work with wood to create artistic masterpieces like picture frames, clothes pin art, and much more! 

Gaga (K-2nd)

Gaga is a physical class that allows children to exert lots of energy through running, dodging, and fun. It also incorporates the ideals of teamwork, strategic thinking, and creativity in making new variations of the game. Some of these variations include Silent Gaga, Team Gaga, Dodge-Ga, Freeze-Ga, Golden Snitch Gaga, Chickens vs Farmers, Poison Wall, Sticky Ninj-Ga, and Build-A-Ga. 

iImagine Improv! (K-2nd)

Ignite your imagination with Bloom Performing Arts introductory improv class. Your children will learn how to create characters, build scenes and think on their feet, while strengthening their self-confidence and public speaking skills. Expand your imagination and work as a team in this fast-paced, belly-laughing improv class. Bring on the funny! 

Anime (3rd-5th)

If you like the Japanese Cartooning style, Anime, this is the class for you! Learn techniques for drawing different types of characters and faces. Students will also write their own stories and learn how to create panels, incorporate text, and design pages. 

Crochet (3rd-5th)

Kids will learn all the basics of crochet, such as how to hold the hook and basic stitches. This class will help kids develop a relaxing hobby for life! 

Martial Arts (3rd-5th)

Learn the ancient practice of self-discipline and physical strength. Kids will practice real, safe moves on breakable boards and pads, while learning tumbling as well 

Girls’ Basketball (3rd-5th)

Geared toward girls who have a passion for basketball and want to improve their game, this class will focus on individual skills including; dribbling, shooting, passing, defense and rebounding. The skills are developed during mock basketball game situations as well as drills. This is a fun, stamina building way to learn basketball. (Only for those students who identify as Female). This class comes at an additional fee of $305.  

Hard to Guard  Basketball (3rd-5th)

Hard to Guard – Basketball skills for anyone looking to improve their game! This class comes at an additional fee of $305. 

Hip Hop Dance (All Ages)

Get that heart pumping with specialist Tara. Professional Dancer, Tara Crichlow, brings classic Hip Hop moves and music to the studio every week, learning basic break dancing, popping and locking and fierce poses. This class has a performance in the end-of-the year show. 

Group Piano (All Ages)

All children will be encouraged to learn songwriting & piano improvisation skills, introduction to the piano, ear training, note reading & writing, music theory, history, piano/keyboard skills, and much more. During these group classes children also learn social skills, about learning music together in a very positive and friendly environment. With completing this course children will have the opportunity to participate in the Spring Piano Recital (small recital fee to be applied at the end of the semester). Our Teachers are highly qualified music professionals who love children and are excited to be a part of this program! This class comes at an additional fee of $250.

Baking with Daniel! (K-2nd)

Satisfy your sweet tooth with the best baking class around! Learn healthy ways to make all kinds of baked goods from s’mores cookies to pancakes and everything in between! 

Mad Science (K-2nd)

Science is truly all around us! Students will conduct experiments and explore the science of the world around them. Get some hands-on lab experience and learn some of the coolest experiments science has to offer! 

Quidditch (K-2nd)

All aboard the Hogwarts Express! Kids will learn the magical game and be better than Harry Potter in no time! Learn the difference between a bludger and a quaffle, and you just might be the one to catch the golden snitch!

Imagination (K-2nd)

Let your mind run wild in this class! Youngers are encouraged to use their imagination to create their own worlds as wild as they can think of!  

Fairy Tales (K-2nd)

Once upon a time… kids will explore fairy tale lands and the princes and princesses who live in them. Kids will learn about some of the most famous fairy tales, and even have a chance to make up their own! 

Game Masters (3rd-5th)

Game Masters introduces kids into creating and running their own game. Kids will learn how to prepare for gaming sessions, create a fun and engaging atmosphere for players, be inclusive to different types of players and friends, and adjust to unexpected changes. Being a game master is about setting up a game for fun for others to enjoy! Game Masters will cover role playing games, improve, and other classics such as Pictionary, Charades, Guess Who, and various other fun games to play right here at after school. If you like to play games with your friends, this is the class for you! 

Chess (3rd-5th)

Around the World Sports (3rd-5th)
Have the experience of playing sports from different countries without leaving the gym. Test your physical skills, from playing cricket and badminton from England, table tennis from Asia, and many more sports. Come challenge your abilities in the 14th Street Y facility. 

Ball Games (3rd-5th)

Get ready for some fast-paced ball games! Be ready to get that heart pumping with all your favorite games including Gaga, four square, taps, and so much more. If you are ready to hone your hand-eye coordination, then this is the class for you.

Shabbat Players (All Ages)

Shabbat Shalom! An age old After School tradition, kids will write and perform the hilarious skits that are performed every Friday at Shabbat! 

Super Soccer Stars (5-12yrs old)

Get the ball rolling! Join Super Soccer Stars, New York City’s most popular soccer development program, right here at the 14th Street Y. Dynamic international coaches work with every student to develop skills, self-confidence, and teamwork in a fun, non-competitive environment.
