SUMMARY:Egg Rolls\, Egg Creams\, and Empanadas!
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, June 18 | 12:00 – 4:00 PM\nEldridge Street between Division & Canal Streets\nIn its 22nd year\, the Egg Rolls\, Egg Creams\, and Empanadas Street Festival is a celebration of the diverse cultures that make up our Lower East Side and Chinatown community. Experience the spirit of this ever-changing neighborhood and the immigrant experience in New York City today through music\, dance\, crafts\, cultural practices\, foodways\, and more! \nThe Lower East Side on the island of Manhattan is a neighborhood brimming with history. Historically\, the “Lower East Side” referred to the area alongside the East River from roughly the Manhattan Bridge/Canal Street up to 14th\, and Broadway on the west. Today\, those boundaries have expanded and shifted\, much like the communities who called “the LES” side home. \nWe are so pleased to be partnering with our Lower East Side neighbors including Loisaida\, Henry Street Settlement\, and Kehila Kedosha Janina Synagogue and Museum. \nThe Egg Rolls\, Egg Creams\, and Empanadas Festival is supported\, in part\, by the National Endowment for the Arts; New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature; New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in Partnership with the City Council; and the Jewish Community Youth Foundation. \nThe Museum will be closed to visitors during the festival.

SUMMARY:Faithful Witness Gallery Opening & ReceptionA Solo Exhibition by Mike McManus
DESCRIPTION:A Solo Exhibition by Mike McManus  \nThursday\, July 6 | 7:00 – 9:30 PM  \nReserve Your Tickets Here \nDon’t miss the gallery opening of Faithful Witness\, a solo exhibition by local artist Mike McManus\, then join us on the 14Y rooftop for a fun afterparty with your downtown community (weather permitting). \nMike McManus’ Faithful Witness explores converging styles of therapeutic and spiritual practices of art making. Steel\, paper\, fabric\, and dye inform the aesthetic of the work\, as do the contrasting processes of manipulation and allowance of these materials. \nMcManus’ Prayer Language series are utterings with ink and oil stick and a groaning of his spirit burnt through steel. The result is a visual “speaking in tongues” a communication with God through spirit\, aesthetically grown out of a fascination and practice of Asian calligraphy and New York streetcore graffiti styles. \nPaired with his dyed canvases\, McManus floats between precise markings and release of control\, allowing the unexpected flow of the dye to work together with his hand. Different attributes of a whole being. McManus has employed dying techniques in a mimic of the sky and its changing shapes and hues. The sun and the moon\, centerpieces of this space. \nAbout the Artist\nMike McManus\, artist\, performer and designer\, was born and raised and lives in New York City. With a background in theater\, dramatic writing and art history\, McManus has been performing in live art\, theater and film since 1999. Creating in the visual arts\, McManus works mainly with metal; welding and forging steel and copper. He also maintains a heavy practice of works on paper and canvas utilizing traditional and non-traditional materials. McManus has curated and had his artwork featured in numerous exhibitions in and around NYC since 2009. \nIn May 2022\, McManus taught Frida’s Flower Crown making workshop at Hudson River Museum and had his fourth solo exhibition entitled Dirty Flowers: For the Heart of NYC\, at LUME Studios\, Feb. 14\, 2022\, with recording artists Infinity Song. \nHis Prayer Language series was featured as part of “Many Ways to Raise a Fist\,” a dance performance by Jerron Herman at the Whitney Museum of American Art during the 2019 Whitney Biennial. \nMcManus is currently Urban Studio Unbound’s Artist In Residence at Warburton Galerie in downtown Yonkers. Mike McManus is old school Hip-Hop and blue collar. He loves Jesus and loves people. New York City is alive in his blood. \nInstagram: @mikemcmanus.nyc | Website: https://remnantstudio.nyc/

SUMMARY:Prayer Language Art Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Prayer Language Art Making Workshop\nLed by Artist Mike McManus \nThe art-based spiritual technique of releasing prayers one has not mustered the words to express.    \nWednesday\, July 19 | 6:30 – 8:30 PM   \n14Y Member $15\, Non-member $25 \nRegistration closes Saturday\, July 15 \nJoin local artist Mike McManus as he leads a group in connecting with their spirituality and employing this connection as a conduit for drawing straight from the soul. \nThe vehicle will be chosen by participants; whether that be crayon\, chalk\, oil stick\, or pencil. The participants’ actions during this workshop will be a form of release—therapeutic markings drawn from unspeakable spaces. \nParticipants will learn to connect to their mark-making as they draw and scrawl on paper\, concerned with the action they’re taking rather than the aesthetic beauty of the finished art product.

DESCRIPTION:An evening of stop motion\, poetry\, Yiddish Modernism and drinks! \nIn this After Dark\, artist and current LABA NY Fellow Danielle Alhassid collaborates with Professor Elazar Elhanan of City College New York – Graduate Center to present the relationship between stop-motion animation\, poetry\, and the Yiddish modernism that developed in New York. That’s why we created 14Y After Dark\, a monthly series that will feature exciting programming and activities just for adults. \nFrom visual arts and gardening to pickling and board games\, stop by the 14Y for an easy\, fun\, and very New York night out with friends and community. \nAbout Danielle Alhassid\nDanielle Alhassid is a multidisciplinary artist\, a graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam\, and a current MFA candidate at Hunter College. Her works involve stop motion animation\, video\, and performance. Alhassid’s work has been shown in the Ron Mandos Gallery\, Het Ham Exhibition Hall\, Amsterdam’s Holocaust Museum\, the Liebling Haus Center\, Studio Bank Gallery\, Ha’ir Museum in Tel Aviv\, Jerusalem’s Azriely Gallery\, OYG projects\, Special Collections\, CCNY\, 205 Gallery\, and Hunter College. Her film\, “Song of the Stone\,” won first prize in the student film competition\, Musraramix Festival in Jerusalem. \nAbout Elazar Elhanan\nElazar Elhanan is an Associate Professor of Hebrew and Yiddish Literature and the Jewish Studies program at City College New York – Graduate Center\, and is the author of “The Path Leading to the Abyss: Hebrew and Yiddish in Yaakov Steinberg’s Poetry.” A forthcoming book from Mossad Bailiek Press studies the relationship between language\, identity\, and nation-building. His current research delves into poetics and aesthetics of large-scale public works of mourning\, such as the Dybbuk.
