SUMMARY:Self-Direction Services (OPWDD) Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The bureaucratic maze known as The Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) is the New York State agency responsible for the oversight of services such as the Medicaid waiver and Self-Direction\, as well as others. Although it may seem quite obvious that you or your child are entitled to services via OPWDD\, getting through the often lengthy and complex process is the catch. \nSelf-direction gives people with disabilities the chance to choose their own services and types of support through OPWDD. When services are self-directed\, people with disabilities have more control over how they want to structure their lives. \nJoin self-direction broker\, author and Autism advocate\, Ken Siri for an informative presentation which will leave attendees knowing what to expect when applying for services and managing them. \nThis event is free and open to families and individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities of any age. The disability needs to have existed prior to age 22. \nSpeaker:\nKen Siri\, self-direction broker\, author and autism advocate\, is the single father of a 21-year-old boy with autism. Ken spent 20 years on Wall Street as a healthcare & technology analyst and is the author of Cutting-Edge Therapies for Autism (now in its fourth edition) and 101 Tips for the Parents of Boys with Autism (second edition). \nKen blogs for Psychology Today and is a passionate voice within the autism community speaking at autism related conferences and has been interviewed by local and nationally syndicated radio\, print\, and television. Ken is a board member of the National Autism Association NY Metro Chapter where he serves as Officer-at-Large. He is also the subject of the documentary film Big Daddy Autism\, currently in production.
